Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI): Understanding the Governing Body of Cycling

Understanding the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the highest governing body for cycling worldwide. Established in 1900 in Paris, France, the UCI is now headquartered in Aigle, Switzerland.

The UCI’s core mission is to set regulations, promote the sport of cycling, and ensure that competitions around the world are conducted in a fair and equitable environment. Whether it’s the UCI World Tour, UCI TRACK WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, or the UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, the UCI oversees the rules and management of these competitions, providing a high-standard platform for elite athletes.

Since its inception, the UCI has focused not only on professional races but also on promoting amateur cycling culture. Through major global events such as the Tour de France and the World Championships, the UCI attracts fans and media attention from around the world, helping to popularize cycling as a sport.

UCI Event Categories

UCI events serve not only as a competitive stage for world-class athletes but also as a key platform for teams and brands to showcase their technical prowess. Based on the level and format of the competitions, the UCI classifies events into different tiers:

1.UCI World Tour Events

The UCI World Tour represents the pinnacle of UCI competitions, including the prestigious Grand Tours:

  • Tour de France
  • Giro d’Italia
  • Vuelta a España

Most of these events are held in Europe, with Asia currently hosting only one World Tour event: the Tour of Guangxi in China.

2.UCI Continental Circuits Events

These races are classified by scale and importance into three levels: Hors Class (HC), Class 1, and Class 2.

UCI Continental Circuits cover various regions, providing more athletes the opportunity to participate in international competitions and gradually progress toward the pinnacle of cycling, the UCI World Tour.

Tour de Taiwan

The Tour de Taiwan is part of the UCI Asia Tour and stands as Taiwan’s largest international cycling event, attracting riders from around the globe each year.
